Mauritius retained its position as the leader in democracy in Africa as it is the only country and nation in Sub-Saharan Africa and the entire region to top the list in this category.<\/p><p>Mauritius is therefore positioned in the same league as the member countries of the G20, namely Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom ranked in the top 20. The continent has six \u201cflawed democracies\u201d in 2022, unchanged from the 2021 index and most African countries are concentrated at the bottom of the Democracy Index rankings.<\/p><p>The EIU Democracy Index provides a snapshot of the state of democracy across 167 countries and territories. The 2022 Democracy Index highlighted that 72 out of 167 countries covered can be considered to be democracies. It is also interesting to note that the number of countries classified as \u2018full democracies\u2019 increased from 21 in 2021 to 24 in 2022.<\/p><p>The number of \u2018flawed democracies\u2019 fell by five to reach 48 in 2022. Out of the remaining 95 countries represented in the index, 59 are \u201cauthoritarian regimes\u201d, the same as in 2021, and 36 are classified as \u201chybrid regimes\u201d, up from 34 the previous
