On May 25th, 2024, we celebrated Africa Day, which also marked the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the African Union. For Mauritius, a member state since gaining independence in 1968, this celebration holds significant meaning, affirming our deep historical, cultural and geographical connections with the African continent.

Africa, renowned for its cultural diversity, natural wonders and historical significance, represents a wealth of opportunities for trade, investment, and sustainable development. Over the years, the continent’s GDP has seen remarkable growth, surpassing USD 3 trillion in 2022, with a market size of USD 2.97 trillion and a population of 1.4 billion. This economic transformation mirrors that of India, highlighting Africa’s potential as a global economic force.

H.E. Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe was sworn in as Secretary General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in July 2018 and became the first woman to serve in this role. She has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors spanning over 30 years in both local and international organisations.

She has a proven track record in leadership, business and operations management with a strong financial and commercial background, and experience in economic development, policy formulation and implementation at regional, continental and global level.

Entrepreneurship is in her DNA. She started at the age of 20 by creating a security company. She is a partner and director of CQTech Ltd specialized in wireless alarm, CCTV, Access Control, Gate Automation & Electric Fence.

Shabnam Anvarally Esmael is of that generation of foreigners who have had time to see more than the postcard aspect of Mauritius.

Perseverance, resilience and character is what kept her going for years. She is now a successful woman entrepreneur evolving in non-traditional feminine sectors, notably 'Waste management' and 'security technology'.

Trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) can reinforce the role of Mauritius as a regional supplier of transformed consumer goods, industrial inputs, and a range of industry-related services.

To identify promising regional value chains for trade and investment, the shifting patterns in trade balances between selected countries of the region (SADC & COMESA member states) and other trade blocs were analysed.

According to industry estimates, Africans spend more than $5 billion annually to access advanced medical treatments overseas. On the continent, South Africa, Kenya and Ghana are the main countries which attract African patients whereas India is the main recipient of African patients outside the continent.

The Economic Development Board (EDB) was honoured with a Gold Award at the National Productivity and Quality Excellence Award (NPQEA) 2024 held on Friday 17th May 2024.

The US Embassy in Mauritius invited and facilitated participation of local stakeholders, public and private, at Enlit Africa 2024 which was held in Cape Town, South Africa from 21 to 23 May 2024.

Mauritius is increasingly emerging as a preferred choice for work, live and retire in the African continent.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Economic Development Board led the flagship annual Mauritius roadshow in South Africa from the 21st to 30th of April 2024.

The Africa Warehousing Scheme (AWS) was introduced in 2020, as a means to encourage Mauritian exporters to tap the huge market potential of the African continent.

The MINDEX Group is working to bridge the gap between the traditional financial system and the digital arena and address the gaps in the financial infrastructure in Africa.

The Economic Development Board in collaboration with the SADC Secretariat and GIZ organised an information workshop in Mauritius on the AfCFTA on 15-16 May 2024.

The primary objective of this CSR project is twofold: to minimize the financial burden of needy students and to promote fair access to education. By covering the full examination fees for needy students taking part in the School Certificate examination for the second time, the EDB hopes to ensure that financial constraints do not inhibit their academic ambitions.
