EDB CSR Project – Education Grant for SC Exams fees for needy students
In today’s dynamic and interconnected world, Education stands as a fundamental pillar for societal progress and individual empowerment. Recognizing this pivotal role, Economic Development Board of Mauritius (EDB) is proud to introduce a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative the “Education Grant Scheme” aimed at supporting underprivileged students whose family cannot afford to pay the exam fees for their second attempt.
In 2020, the Ministry of Education brought a significant change in policy requiring students to attain five credits at one sitting in their School Certificate Examination to qualify to sit for the Higher School Certificate Examination. The CSR project, aimed at covering school certificate examination fees for needy students, who will not be able to continue school as the examination fees for second attempt is not borne by the Government.
The primary objective of this CSR project is twofold: to minimize the financial burden of needy students and to promote fair access to education. By covering the full examination fees for needy students taking part in the School Certificate examination for the second time, the EDB hopes to ensure that financial constraints do not inhibit their academic ambitions.
For this first edition, with a limited budget, the EDB have identified 3 schools, namely, Patten College-Rose-Hill, Nelson College-St Pierre and Bhujoharry College-Quartier Militaire where there are many needy students among their school population. Each school was requested to submit names of 2 students, who meet the following criteria:
- The student had obtained at least 3 Credits at first attempt of School Certificate Examination.
- Due to financial difficulty, the parent(s) of the student is (are) unable to pay the examination fees.
- The beneficiaries are willing to pursue their education and sit for the examinations for the second time
EDB has paid the examination fees of 5 needy students from the above mentioned institutions.
