Economic Freedom - Mauritius climbs into the top 10
Mauritius ranks 9th globally, leapfrogging from last year’s 11th position out of 165 countries and joins the league of top 10 countries which are most favorable to economic freedom according to the annual Economic Freedom Report published by the Fraser Institute.
The report entitled ‘Economic Freedom of the World: 2022 Annual Report’ also shows that Mauritius has sustained its first position as the most-economically free country in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Index of Economic Freedom studies 165 economies throughout the world and provides in-depth analysis of each country’s degree of economic freedom in five key areas namely the Size of Government, Legal System and Property Rights, Sound Money, Freedom to Trade Internationally, and Regulation of credit, labor, and business.
The top 10 countries in the index for 2022 are Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, Australia, United States, Estonia, Mauritius, and Ireland. The rankings of some other major countries are Japan (12th), Canada (14th), Germany (25th), Italy (44th), France (54th), Mexico (64th), India (89th), Russia (94th), Brazil (114th), and China (116th).
