Mauritius: Where Innovation meets Opportunities
The Mauritius Start up ecosystem has witnessed major growth in recent years to emerge as one of the fastest-growing startup ecosystems in Africa. Indeed, according to the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2024 by Startup Blink, Mauritius is 2nd highest ranked country in Africa and 59th globally thanks to its well-developed physical infrastructure and innovative schemes.
The country currently boasts an attractive start up ecosystem in Eastern Africa with a thriving landscape for technology start ups particularly in sectors such as Fintech, Cybersecurity, ecommerce, digital content among others. Start ups are currently leveraging on emerging technologies such as AI, Blockchain, IOT among others to develop innovative solutions thus driving economic growth and innovation in the country.
The Government is committed to reinforcing its ecosystem of support through a series of proactive measures namely the National SME Incubator Scheme (NSIS), Innovator Occupation permit, Innovation and Commercialization Scheme to assist start-ups looking to develop ground-breaking new products and services.
Today, the country has more than 100 technology start ups and the success of some of those start ups on the international stage underpins the country’s rising prominence in the start up and innovation world.
Startup Blink is a global startup map and research center, empowering stakeholders with ecosystem development services and tailored analysis on the global innovation economy. It publishes the Global Startup Ecosystem Index on an annual basis since 2017 and Mauritius is part of the index since 2021.
Some Key observations from the Global Ecosystem Index 2024
- For 2024, the biggest industry for startups is Software & Data, accounting to 33.7% of the world’s startups.
- Ecommerce & Retail startups are surging, increasing from 9.5% to 11.4%. This trend likely reflects growing consumer adoption of online shopping or advancements in online retail experiences.
- The global semiconductor industry is projected to continue its growth to reach US$ 1 trillion in revenue by 2030, according to Deloitte’s Semiconductor Industry Outlook 2024
- According to Statista, the market for artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to show strong growth in the coming decade. Its market value is projected to skyrocket to almost US$ 2 trillion by 2030.
