The Economic Development Board (EDB) and the University of Mauritius recently co-hosted the Trend Forum, an event that united around thirty leading designers and CEOs from the textile sector. Held on Wednesday, August 7th, at the EDB headquarters in Ebene, the forum provided a platform for industry experts to delve into emerging trends in fashion and manufacturing.
Honourable Mrs. Naveena Ramyad, Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs, and Cooperatives underscored the textile and clothing sector’s vital role as the backbone of Mauritius’ export manufacturing industry. She highlighted the sector’s contribution of approximately 20.9 billion MUR in exports and employment for about 19,000 individuals.
Mrs. Ramyad noted the industry’s evolution since the 1970s, including its resilience through challenges such as the dismantling of the Multi-Fibre Arrangement in 2000, which prompted many investors to shift to other regions. She commended the sector’s adaptability and innovative strategies, which include a focus on design, technology, and sustainability.
The minister emphasized the need for the sector to remain agile and innovative in the face of a dynamic global market. To support this, her ministry is working on initiatives aimed at technological transformation and sustainability. She also highlighted the importance of diversifying export markets and leveraging trade agreements with countries like India, China, the UAE, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Mr. Geerish Bucktowonsing, Director of Industry, SMEs, Logistics, and Freeport at EDB, stressed the importance of seizing new regional and global opportunities. He cited a McKinsey report emphasizing fashion’s role as a major global industry, driving significant economic impact and employment.
The Trend Forum featured a presentation by Mrs. Sheila Murugan, an internationally renowned fashion designer with over 40 years of experience, currently affiliated with Yves Saint Laurent. Her insights into the latest fashion trends added significant value to the discussions.
This forum is part of a broader capacity-building initiative aimed at equipping industry professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to stay competitive. It served as a vital resource for designers, CEOs, and stakeholders, fostering informed decision-making and readiness for emerging opportunities in the textile and fashion industries.
