EDB CEO highlights Mauritius’ energy transition at Clean Energy Week 2025

The sports economy in Mauritius has emerged as a significant contributor to the country’s socio-economic benefits. As a tourism-driven economy, Mauritius has recognized the immense potential of the sports industry to drive growth and development.
The government’s national strategy to promote sports tourism will be a game-changer, attracting international events and competitions that have a ripple effect on the broader economy. Government investment in sports infrastructure and facilities will not only enhance the country’s appeal as a sports destination but has also addressed youth unemployment by creating new job opportunities.
In this regard, the EDB Mauritius organized a workshop on the 9th of May at its office in Ebene. The workshop focused on the roadmap to promote adventure tourism as a new national economic pillar while contributing to the tourism sector, generating revenue from accommodation, transportation, dining, and leisure activities.
During the event, Mr. Nanda Narrainen, Director of the Creative Industry at EDB Mauritius, emphasized on the importance of setting up a framework to further advance the implementation of Adventure Tourism in Mauritius. He stated: ‘There have been recommendations from consultants in the past regarding adventure tourism. The EDB has a Sports Economy department, and the aim is to diversify national sport as it has been successfully done in other countries. In Mauritius we need a more structured approach to develop an ecosystem for adventure tourism.’
Adventure tourism and sports tourism have been identified as methods that will boost tourism revenue. They will also contribute to economic growth, environmental and cultural sustainability, and the diversification of tourism. For the first half of 2023, 92% of tourists came to Mauritius mainly for holidays, more than the 81.4% estimated in the first half of 2018.
Sports infrastructure investments, such as stadiums, arenas, and training centres, generate revenue through employment, maintenance services, and construction contracts. In addition to promoting the growth of local sports, these venues hold national and international competitions, which provide income and country publicity.
The importance of the sports economy in Mauritius cannot be overstated. It is a strategic pillar that has the potential to unlock new avenues for growth, enhance the country’s global competitiveness, and ultimately improve the overall socio-economic well-being of its citizens.
