H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Hategeka, High Commissioner of the Republic of Rwanda to the Republic of Mauritius with residence in Pretoria, South Africa, paid a courtesy call on the CEO of EDB, Mr. Ken Poonoosamy this afternoon, 16th September 2024. The High Commissioner was accompanied by Mr. Didas Mungarurire, First Counsellor at the Rwanda High Commission in Pretoria and Mr. Nikesh Patel, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Rwanda. The Rwanda High Commissioner to Mauritius, H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Hategeka, will present his Letter of Credence to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr. Prithvirajsing Roopun, at the State House in Reduit on 17th September 2024.

The CEO of EDB, Mr. Ken Poonoosamy, highlighted the bilateral relations between the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Rwanda and expressed the willingness to renew existing ties with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to create a framework for cooperation, consultation and exchange of information between both entities. It is anticipated that the collaboration between both entities will yield tangible benefits for the business communities in both Mauritius and Rwanda. Cooperation with the Republic of Rwanda in the area of advanced technologies, such as clean energy was also discussed.
Rwanda aims to position itself as a technology leader in the region with ICT ecosystem developments. The discussions focused on the transition of the ICT/BPO sector which has moved up the value chain in Mauritius over the last decade and the provision of ICT services to Rwanda.
The CEO of EDB also highlighted the importance of the Mauritius International Financial Centre (MIFC) which has developed into a regional platform and is playing a prominent role in driving investment into Africa and the use of the MIFC for cross border investment to the Republic of Rwanda was mentioned.
It should be highlighted that Mauritius has become a key destination for students from across Africa, including Rwanda, seeking high-quality education. As at date, there are 189 students from Rwanda pursuing their higher studies in Mauritius including the medical field.
The High Commissioner has extended an invitation to the EDB to coordinate and lead an investment & trade promotion mission comprising a delegation of potential Mauritian private sector operators having an interest in the Republic of Rwanda.
